Karen Youngblood, 47, of Lowell sustained serious injuries Thursday afternoon after being struck by a pickup truck while trying to change a tire on her Plymouth sedan in the breakdown lane on 495 South near Exit 47 in Methuen. The Eagle Tribune reports that Youngblood continues to remain at a Boston area hospital for treatment of her severe injuries. Mike Belisle, 29, of North Andover has been identified as the driver of the Ford pickup truck that hit Youngblood.

Belisle stated that he was driving the speed limit on the highway prior to braking and hitting Youngblood. It was reported that Belisle remained at the scene of the accident and cooperated with Massachusetts State Police, who are handling the investigation of the accident.

Repeat OUI Offender Charged in New Crash

Rodney Fraser, 31, of Haverhill faces his third charge of drunken driving after he struck a parked car on Commonwealth Avenue last Friday evening around 8:00pm in Haverhill with the Ford pickup truck he was driving. Fraser then drove off after hitting the parked Chevrolet Impala and police soon caught up with him, finding Fraser sleeping in his truck that was parked around the corner from the accident site. Fraser was then arrested. The Impala sustained front left quarter panel damage and a shattered head light. The Eagle Tribune reports that David Sayers of Haverhill is the owner of the Impala that was struck by Fraser.

Fraser previously had his license revoked for 8 years last June after he was convicted of drunk driving. He was also charged with drunken driving back in April of 1998. Fraser additionally has prior convictions of driving after his license was suspended. Carrie Remsen, 37, of Haverhill was cited by police for allowing Fraser to operate her pickup truck. Fraser’s arraignment took place yesterday in Haverhill District Court and he is currently being held without bail. Fraser is due back in court at the end of June.

Statistics on Drunken Driving
According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), 1 person dies every 50 minutes from fatal injuries in a drunk driving accident in the U.S. It is also estimated that 1 in every 3 people will somehow be involved in an accident over the course of their lifetime where alcohol plays a contributing factor in the crash. Drunk driving crashes comprise 1/3 of all fatal accidents in the U.S. every year.

Andover High School Student Creates Veggie Car

lyssa Solomon, an 18-year-old Andover High School senior has converted her car to run on vegetable oil, the Eagle Tribune reported. Her white mid-sized diesel car, an 1986 Mercedes-Benz 300 SDL, which Solomon nicknamed the "Veggie Car", runs on waste vegetable oil instead of diesel.

Solomon is also the co-president of the Environmental Club at her high school. She reportedly bought the 25-year old Mercedes with the idea to turn it into a greener car, which incidentally is a part of her senior exhibition project.

Cross-Country Trip in the “Veggie Car”

But it is not all for show. Solomon plans to use the car as she would any other. She plans to make a cross-country trip to California this summer and fuel up on waste vegetable oil from restaurants along the way. Vegetable oil combusts at the same temperature and pressure as diesel fuel, and she can use any form of vegetable oil, including peanut and canola oil.

Converting the Car

For the conversion from diesel to vegetable oil, Solomon had to install a second 18-gallon aluminum tank which holds the filtered vegetable oil. The car still needs to be able to run on diesel fuel, since it doesn’t run on vegetable oil all the time. "You first start it on diesel,” Solomon said.

However, once the engine reaches a certain temperature, Solomon can switch to the vegetable oil. According to her, she can get about 25 miles per gallon vegetable oil.

This is inspiring since Solomon is one of the few who would not need to worry about rising gas prices. It only cost her about $1,700 to convert the car.

Besides being a greener alternative, the “Veggie Car” also smells different than most cars. According to Solomon, "It smells like French fries."

We wish Solomon a happy journey and further success in her green-oriented projects.

Van Accident Injuries Can Be Devastating

Van accidents can cause devastating and even permanent injuries to those who are involved in these types of crashes. Neck and back pain could turn into chronic conditions, while recurring headaches, various other aches and pains could also have a significant impact on crash survivors.

Van Safety
Every 13 minutes in the U.S. a person dies from fatal injuries in a motor vehicle crash. Even though there are extensive studies and reviews conducted on the safety of vans, the truth is that no motor vehicle can guarantee that a driver won’t become involved in a collision with another vehicle. In some instances, there is nothing that could have been done on a driver’s part to prevent a van accident.

The reason for this is simply because of countless contributing factors, such as a drunk driver veering into the oncoming lane or winter road conditions. Vans tend to be more challenging to operate than other motor vehicles in certain road conditions, such as when it’s very windy, pouring rain or icy. Additionally, a van is more likely to rollover in a collision, as opposed to another type of passenger vehicle.

The Aftermath of a Van Accident
Nearly 3 million people sustain injuries in car crashes in the U.S. on an annual basis. If you have been seriously injured in a van accident, you could be entitled to recover compensation for:
  • Physical therapy or other rehabilitative treatment
  • Medical bills from treatment
  • Property damage
  • Any lost wages from work that you may have missed as a result of the van accident
  • Emotional distress and other personal injury claims that you may be able to pursue

New Bedford Man Dies in Truck Crash

Christopher Richert, 49 of New Bedford lost his life in a single-vehicle pickup truck accident on Route 3 in Plymouth Monday afternoon.

How Did the Accident Occur?

According to state police, Richert was driving south when his pick-up truck went off the road, struck several trees and rolled over. Richert, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the rollover accident is still under investigation.

Massachusetts Seat Belt Law

Richert was not wearing a seat belt at the time of his accident, which is regrettable since it has been proven time and time again that seat belts save lives in motor vehicle accidents, especially in crashes with trees and rollovers.

Section 13A of the Massachusetts Seat Belt Law states, “No person shall operate a private passenger motor vehicle or ride in a private passenger motor vehicle, a vanpool vehicle or truck under 18,000 pounds on any way unless such person is wearing a safety belt which is properly adjusted and fastened…”

While the monetary fine for not wearing a seat belt in Massachusetts is $25, the real cost can be catastrophic in a crash. It can cost a person their life.

Pickup Truck Accident Statistics

According to the FARS reports on the NHTSA website, there were 17,902 fatalities from light truck accidents in the United States. Of them, 2,471 deaths were due to collisions between trucks and a fixed object.

If your loved one has been traumatically injured or killed in a Massachusetts truck accident, contact the experienced Boston personal injury lawyers at Kiley Law Group, LLC who will help you determine the negligent party and take the best course of legal action.

Fall River Man Faces DWI Charges in Bedford, NH Crash

David Lamond, 55, of Fall River is facing charges of driving while intoxicated (DWI) in connection with a multi-vehicle accident in Bedford, NH nearly two weeks ago. The Bedford Journal reports that Lamond struck two other cars with his Jeep Liberty around 8:00pm on Friday, April 29, by the intersection of Route 101 and Route 114. The vehicles that were hit were a Hyundai Elantra and a Honda Odyssey, the drivers of which have not been identified.

Officials responding to the accident site reported that Lamond emitted a smell of alcohol and eventually determined that he was driving drunk behind the wheel. None of the drivers or passengers involved in the crash were reportedly injured. Lamond was released on $1,000 bail and is set to return to Merrimack District Court towards the end of May.
