Karen Youngblood, 47, of Lowell sustained serious injuries Thursday afternoon after being struck by a pickup truck while trying to change a tire on her Plymouth sedan in the breakdown lane on 495 South near Exit 47 in Methuen. The Eagle Tribune reports that Youngblood continues to remain at a Boston area hospital for treatment of her severe injuries. Mike Belisle, 29, of North Andover has been identified as the driver of the Ford pickup truck that hit Youngblood.
Belisle was heading to a landscaping job with a co-worker around 2:30pm when a car in front of him slammed on the brakes, which caused Belisle to also immediately apply the brakes and then hit Youngblood. Belisle stated that he was driving the speed limit on the highway prior to braking and hitting Youngblood. It was reported that Belisle remained at the scene of the accident and cooperated with Massachusetts State Police, who are handling the investigation of the accident.

Senior Driver Accident Statistics in Massachusetts
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation reports that intersections are the most commonly cited places for car accidents to occur that involve elderly drivers. The two leading causes for these crashes are when a senior driver fails to yield to traffic that has the right of way and when turning left against the opposite lane of travel. These two instances account for the majority of accidents caused by senior drivers in the Commonwealth.
While the department emphasizes that driving is based on one’s physical and mental ability, not one’s age, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has reported that elderly drivers cause about 12% of all fatal crashes in the U.S. and cause just under 20% of all deadly accidents involving pedestrians.
In Massachusetts, drivers who are aged 75 or older and who need to renew their driver’s license are required to do so in person at a Registry of Motor Vehicles branch. A vision test must be passed at that time or proof shown that the driver has a Vision Screening Certificate in order for the license to be renewed.

MBTA Unveils First New Locomotive in 23 Years
The MBTA unveiled a newly purchased locomotive during a ceremony at South Station in Boston on Monday. The locomotive is the first new purchase in the last 23 years.
Two years ago, the MBTA announced that it will not buy new locomotives for the commuter rail service due to financial difficulties and problems with the two companies that were competing for the contract.
The newly purchased diesel-electric locomotive is one of two new trains obtained from the Utah Transit Authority, MBTA officials said.
The new locomotive addition is one of the ways the MBTA is trying to improve the commuter rail service, which has been recently plagued by delays and breakdowns due to the harsh winter.
According to officials, the new locomotive’s engine is more fuel-efficient and prevents unnecessary idling. Also, the new locomotives will reduce air pollutant levels by 20 tons per engine annually, officials said.
A recent press release stated that existing locomotives burn 228,000 gallons of fuel per year each, resulting in the release of 241 tons of pollutants. The new locomotives will burn about 36,500 less gallons of fuel while generating more horsepower, thus resulting in energy savings of about $78,000 a year per locomotive.
More train purchases are to be expected, since last June, the MassDOT Board of Directors approved the purchase of 20 additional diesel-electric locomotives from Motive Power Inc. of Boise, Idaho at a cost of $114 million. The 20 new locomotives are expected to be brought into service in 2013 as replacements for the 20 oldest units in the fleet.
As Boston accident lawyers, we would like to remind all motorists, motorcyclists, truck drivers, and especially pedestrians, to be extra cautious when approaching train tracks. Even if you are confident that a train is not approaching a crossing, this is not enough to be sure you are safe to cross without using caution. Always check both ways before approaching to cross train tracks and only do so in designated crossing areas.

Don’t Forget This Part of Your Game Plan on Super Bowl Sunday
Super Bowl Sunday is coming up fast and you most likely already have plans set up for where you’re going to see the February 6 game. In preparation for the big game, don’t forget one of the most important plays of your day: getting home safely after the televised celebration wraps up.
In Massachusetts in 2009, 26% of drivers who were in the 333 deadly accidents that year registered a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher. Of those accidents, 30% of drivers involved in fatal crashes registered a BAC of .01 or higher. If you’re going to be drinking on Super Bowl Sunday, please start your planning now to use public transportation, if possible, or ask a designated driver to get you back home.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) began a campaign dubbed the Give the Gift of a Designated Driver, and it helps those who want to be a designated driver to let their friends and family have the option of getting a ride home after the festivities come to an end.
MADD reports that 32% of all deadly accidents in 2010 in Massachusetts involved a driver who was drunk at the time of the crash. Of those fatal crashes in the Commonwealth last year, 108 people died because of drunk driving.
Please make plans today to get home safely after enjoying the game.
