Pedestrian Struck, Seriously Injured in Andover Accident

The Eagle Tribune reports that an Andover man sustained serious injuries yesterday after he was hit by a vehicle while he was walking across Dascomb Road in Andover.

What Happened

The unidentified 58-year-old pedestrian was crossing Dascomb Road around 6:00 p.m. when a 56-year-old driver struck him with his Honda Civic.  The pedestrian was reportedly stuck underneath the vehicle, which had to be lifted up in order to rescue the injured man.  One of the man’s shoes was found in the middle of the roadway.

Officials have reported that there was extensive damage to the windshield on the passenger side of the vehicle.  The unnamed pedestrian was rushed to an area hospital before he was transported to a Boston hospital for further medical treatment.

The accident happened in the area of Lovejoy Road.  There is a traffic light at the intersection where the accident occurred.  The roadway was shut down for roughly 4 hours to allow for a reconstruction of the accident.  Authorities are continuing to investigate the serious pedestrian accident.

Auto Accidents Prompt Newton Officials to Reassess Role of Cars in City

In an effort to decrease the number of Massachusetts car accidents and fatalities, as well as make the city friendlier to alternative modes of transportation, the Newton Mayor has been asked to adopt seven goals with regard to making decisions related to transportation, according to Boston.com. Strengthening alternative modes of transportation, reducing driving and increasing safety are the major goals of the city’s new approach towards transportation.  

For Bicyclists

There are many proposals aimed at making Newton’s roads safer and more inviting for bicyclists. One of them is to develop a minimum of 20 additional miles of bike lanes or other type of roadway accommodations for cyclists in the next five years. The city only has 3.6 miles of bike lanes currently. A Bicycle Master Plan was also proposed and should be completed in April 2012, which asks that a Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee be created and that the mayor designate a bicycle coordinator as well as a pedestrian coordinator.  

For Pedestrians

An improved sidewalk network, especially near schools, is one of the safety recommendations. The city will work with schools to increase the number of kids walking to school and to address traffic issues. Furthermore, the city may prohibit the creation of additional cul-de-sacs because they are said to “hamper pedestrian mobility.”

There are also proposals to encourage local and regional efforts to expand and improve bus and rail access and capacity.

Update on Elderly Pedestrian Hit, Killed by Car Yesterday in Lawrence

Eulalio Rosario, 79, of Lawrence, was hit and killed by a Chrysler Pacifica yesterday morning on High Street in Lawrence. 

The elderly victim was on his way to the Lawrence Senior Center around 8:00am for the day when he was struck by the Chrysler, operated by Madeline Delgado, 27, also of Lawrence.  Delgado has not been charged at this time by police, according to authorities involved with the case. 

Rosario had just left his daughter’s home where he lived when he was struck by Delgado, who stated that Rosario had suddenly appeared in the street and she was not able to stop her car in time.  His daughter, Maria Polanco, had witnessed the accident happen from a window of the house. 

It was reported that the force of the impact sent Rosario up 10 feet in the air before he landed on the street.  The tragic collision forced Rosario’s shoes to come off and other items scattered in the roadway.  Polanco rushed to her father and called for help.  Rosario was transported to a local hospital for treatment, but was pronounced dead a short time later from his injuries. 

It had been originally reported that Rosario was 56-years-old.

Man Struck, Killed by Minivan in Lawrence

An unidentified 56-year-old man was struck by a minivan on High Street in Lawrence  earlier this morning around 8:30am.  The man was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 

Lawrence police say that the man stepped onto the street between cars and was then hit by the van that was driving east on High Street in the area of Pleasant Street.  The driver of the minivan that hit the pedestrian is also unknown at this time, but it has been reported that she is cooperating with police.  The scene of the accident is currently being investigated by police in order to find out how the fatal accident occurred.

Pedestrian Accident in Andover: Are You Looking Both Ways Before You Cross?

The day before a 14-year-old student was hit by a teenage driver, another pedestrian was also struck while crossing a street in Andover.

Thomas Romano, 52, was struck by a car this past Sunday morning as he attempted to cross Railroad Street around 9:00am.

Romano, of Andover, was transported to Lawrence General Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the car that hit Romano was 38-year-old Mark Van Doren, also of Andover. Three witnesses were present at the scene, according to Andover police.

Officials are reporting that Van Doren was driving approximately 20 miles per hour as a result of the sun reflecting on his windshield. The solar glare is what authorities believe led to Van Doren hitting Romano, who was not in a pedestrian crosswalk at the time of the accident.
