The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently announced a statement on General Motor’s (GM) plan to address a potential defect in the Chevrolet Volt which may pose significant fire risks in the event of a serious accident, as well as conducting its own investigation into the matter.
NHTSA Investigation
The NHTSA is the primary safety agency in charge of reducing the numbers of injuries and fatalities caused by motor vehicle accidents on U.S. roadways, and, as such, the NHTSA has opened an investigation in order to collect and analyze information concerning the risk of post-crash fires in Chevy Volts. Although the investigation, which is being conducted in collaboration with Department of Defense and Department of Energy experts, is not yet completed, preliminary conclusions demonstrate that both coolant leakage and battery intrusion must occur to create a post-crash fire in the Volt.
GM’s Reinforcement Remedy
GM has designed a steel reinforcement device in order to prevent the aforementioned dangerous conditions that would cause a post-crash fire. The NHTSA crash-tested a Volt retrofitted with the GM device and the test revealed no coolant leak or battery intrusion. Once the NHTSA completes its analysis, it will then provide further information to consumers and all other relevant parties.

Auto Accidents Prompt Newton Officials to Reassess Role of Cars in City
In an effort to decrease the number of Massachusetts car accidents and fatalities, as well as make the city friendlier to alternative modes of transportation, the Newton Mayor has been asked to adopt seven goals with regard to making decisions related to transportation, according to Boston.com. Strengthening alternative modes of transportation, reducing driving and increasing safety are the major goals of the city’s new approach towards transportation.
For Bicyclists
There are many proposals aimed at making Newton’s roads safer and more inviting for bicyclists. One of them is to develop a minimum of 20 additional miles of bike lanes or other type of roadway accommodations for cyclists in the next five years. The city only has 3.6 miles of bike lanes currently. A Bicycle Master Plan was also proposed and should be completed in April 2012, which asks that a Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee be created and that the mayor designate a bicycle coordinator as well as a pedestrian coordinator.
For Pedestrians
An improved sidewalk network, especially near schools, is one of the safety recommendations. The city will work with schools to increase the number of kids walking to school and to address traffic issues. Furthermore, the city may prohibit the creation of additional cul-de-sacs because they are said to “hamper pedestrian mobility.”
Improving Mass Transit
There are also proposals to encourage local and regional efforts to expand and improve bus and rail access and capacity.

New transportation policies can go a long way in keeping motorists and non-motorists safe, but unless every driver makes a concerted effort to drive safely, the number of accidents will not decrease. If you have been injured in a Massachusetts auto accident caused by another’s negligence, contact the experienced Boston traffic accident attorneys with the Kiley Law Group to learn more about holding the at-fault party responsible for your losses.

Secretary of DOT Encourages Safe Driving this Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend
This week, the highly anticipated Thanksgiving holiday arrives, and with it, an increase in holiday travelers. The American Automobile Association (AAA) predicts a four percent increase in the number of people traveling over the holiday weekend, Nov. 23 through Nov. 27. Last year, 40.9 million Americans traveled during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The recession had spurred a drop in Thanksgiving holiday travel. Though the economy has not climbed out of the recession just yet, AAA forecasts this year’s number of Thanksgiving weekend travelers to reach about 42.5 million.
The fall and winter season holiday celebrations are anticipated all year round and Thanksgiving is no exception. Celebrating thanks with family and friends around a table laden with delicious food is an occasion worth traveling many miles for, but in order to get there, you need to drive safely and defensively. With so many motorists out on the road for the holiday weekend, traffic and poor weather or road conditions can increase the risk of an injury accident.

However, the settlement of your claim will depend on factors, such as:
- The amount of time between your accident and the day you file your claim;
The details of your claim; - The extent and the severity of your injuries resulting from the car accident;

Five Common Myths That Can Hurt Your Claim
- If you are reasonable with the insurance company and write a letter explaining what happened, you’ll get a fair settlement offer;
- If the insurance company calls you up to request a recorded statement regarding your accident, you are obligated to comply or else they won’t settle your claim;
- The other driver’s insurance company is supposed to cover all of your medical expenses related to the accident;
- If not the other driver’s, there has to be some other insurance company that will cover your medical costs, lost wages from missing work, and compensation for your injuries;
- Massachusetts juries are generous.

Mass Man Injured in NH Truck Mud Race
An unidentified Massachusetts man sustained injuries in East Lebanon, New Hampshire this past Sunday after he somehow lost control of his GMC truck while racing at the Go Deep Mud Track.
The unnamed man is reportedly in his 60s, according to The Portland Press Herald. He was transported to a local hospital after the truck launched over a pit and went roughly 100 feet into a wooded area, before it came to a rest in a stream of water estimated to be 3 feet deep.
The driver was not conscious when he was pulled from the truck. Officials have stated that his injuries are currently listed as non-life-threatening.
Liability Issues
Problems with the throttle may have played a role in this accident. Authorities have reported that the truck’s throttle could have been jammed, which would have made it extremely difficult for the driver to dislodge it while still maintaining control over the truck.
The investigation into the crash and whether or not mechanical failures contributed to the accident is ongoing by New Hampshire officials.
