Hairo Gomez Pleads Guilty in Fatal Staged Car Accident

Hairo Gomez, 33, formerly of Lawrence, Massachusetts, pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges in connection to a staged car accident in which his 65-year-old grandmother, Altagracia Arias, died. Arias was a willing participant in the scheme, news reports said.

According to prosecutors, Gomez was driving one of the vehicles in the intentional crash in September 2003, as an attempt to defraud the insurance company.

Gomez will serve a sentence of 2 1/2 years in prison concurrently with a 5-year drug sentence he is serving in New Jersey. Upon his release, Gomez faces deportation to the Dominican Republic.
