Man Struck, Killed by Minivan in Lawrence

An unidentified 56-year-old man was struck by a minivan on High Street in Lawrence  earlier this morning around 8:30am.  The man was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 

Lawrence police say that the man stepped onto the street between cars and was then hit by the van that was driving east on High Street in the area of Pleasant Street.  The driver of the minivan that hit the pedestrian is also unknown at this time, but it has been reported that she is cooperating with police.  The scene of the accident is currently being investigated by police in order to find out how the fatal accident occurred.

Statistics on Fatal Pedestrian Accidents
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly 850 pedestrians were killed in 2009 across the U.S. due to improperly crossing roadways.  The total number of fatalities among pedestrians in 2009 was 4,092.  Pedestrians who were killed for running into the roadway or “darting” into a street accounted for 469 of the total deaths.  There were 446 pedestrians who were struck and killed because they were not clearly visible to drivers.
