Methuen Man Dies in Snowmobile Accident

Mark Torres, 44, of Methuen died in a snowmobile crash off of Lowell Street  in Methuen Friday evening.  According to officials, Torres was trying to maneuver his snowmobile over a steep embankment alongside the Merrimack River around 8:00pm when the snowmobile landed on top of him, resulting in fatal injuries.

Torres had left his home at about 5:00 that night to go for a ride and when he didn’t come back home when expected, his wife rounded up friends and neighbors to search for him.  One of the friends found Torres shortly after searching for him and called 911.  He was rushed to an area hospital but was pronounced dead about an hour after being found.  Authorities are continuing to investigate the deadly crash.

Snowmobiles are owned and enjoyed by nearly 3 million people  across the country, with millions of other snowmobile enthusiasts around the world.  Each year, it’s estimated that about 200 people die in fatal snowmobiling crashes.  Snowmobilers in the U.S. also experience about 14,000 injuries in a given riding season.  The most commonly cited reasons why these tragedies occur involve speed, alcohol, and inexperience among riders.
