2009 Statistics on Massachusetts Fatal Car Accidents

Nearly every day in the news, we hear about car accidents that happen on Massachusetts roadways.  Some can be tragic and result in fatalities, with others not as severe.  Still, the prevalence of crashes in the Bay State is an issue we as drivers should take seriously.

Fatal accidents have gone down across the U.S. and in Massachusetts, which is clearly good news.  In sharing these statistics with you, we hope that drivers in the state can remember them and stay safe as they get in their cars with each commute or errand they take.

The statistics cited below are from sets of data reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).

U.S. Car Accidents Involving Fatalities
According to the NHTSA, there were 30,797 car accidents across the nation in 2009 that involved a fatality.  This has gone down from the 34,172 fatal accidents from 2008.  Overall, there were 33,808 people who were killed in fatal accidents in 2009, as opposed to the 37,423 individuals who died in 2008.
