MADD Power Talk 21

April 21 isn’t just another day to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), it’s a nationally recognized day for parents to take some time and talk with their teenagers about the devastating effects of underage drinking. Parents can request information, tips, and conversation starters to break the ice from MADD about approaches to take when addressing this important issue with their teen. Even though it may be difficult at first for some parents to discuss this topic, it can help make your relationship much stronger with your teen and can inform them about the risky reality of underage drinking.

Teen drinking makes the headlines on a daily basis, especially when teenagers get behind the wheel of a car and attempt to drive after drinking. According to the organization that began as an off-shoot of MADD, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) reports that about 12% of newly licensed teen drivers drove drunk at least once in 2008. Drunk driving crashes make up about 1/3 of all car accident fatalities across the country on an annual basis.

SADD further reports that before even graduating high school, about 75% of students in a given graduating class have already consumed more than a few sips of alcohol, with nearly 40% of students having tried alcohol before starting the 8th grade. On average, almost 60% of teens who drink typically do so in someone else’s home, with about 30% of teens reporting that they drink at home. So try to take some time today in honor of MADD’s Power Talk 21 to speak with your teen about the dangers of drinking and the life-changing effects that it can have on their life.
